The Short Guy

Location: Brew Dog, Bristol

Venturing into the Bristol dating world for the first time and it just had to be with someone who had gone to my school. I didn’t know him as he had been a few years above me, but it was actually quite fun talking about ex-teachers and people we both knew. He was good looking, lived in a little cottage in the countryside near Bristol, had a dog and plans to keep chickens (the latter, as anyone who knows me will understand, excited me quite a bit!)

Unfortunately however, he had been sat at the bar when I arrived, and when he got up to go to the bathroom he jumped off the bar stall and literally his head came up to my neck.

Height is going to feature a bit in this blog, as it has in my dating life, and I do feel really bad because I’m sure there are so many lovely short guys out there, this guy being one of them. I also know I am being completely height-ist, but I can't help it, I find tall men really attractive and unless there is a real spark I would find it hard to get over that.

I think the best way to get round it is for guys to say their height on their biog. And actually I'm beginning to realise that the ones that don't, are the short ones. I started talking to one guy and he asked me before we were about to go a date how I felt about being vertically challenged? I asked 'exactly how vertically challenged?', and it turned out he was the same height as me and we mutually decided to leave it. Less awkwardness for both of us.

I guess that is one of the perils of online dating that you just don't get if you if meet someone in a bar...oh times have changed!

  1. If short guys put it in their bio they would just get filtered out. I'm glad I'm married as in the current online dating world I'd never get a date (as I'm 5 foot 8) and nor would any guy below 6ft!! Shouldn't shorter guys get a chance!!?

The Twitchy Eye Guy

Location: All Bar One, Clapham My very first online blind date! I was super nervous and had no idea what to expect and no idea how I would recognise him. I had dressed up to go to work and made lots of effort. More fool me. We had decided to meet at the entrance to Clapham Junction Station. Looking back, what on earth was I thinking? CJ is the busiest station ever and not a good place to meet a blind date for the first time. I was standing with my back to the coffee house watching all the people come through the barriers, when I spotted a guy waiting across the way from me who I thought could be my date. We made eye contact and he smiled. I thought ‘jack-pot’ as he was seriously good looking and I was just about to saunter over when a girl (clearly his girlfriend!) tapped him on the shoulder and kissed him. My first taste of disappointment, but definitely not to be my last. When my date did finally appear, he wasn’t quite what I was expecting from his pictures (under...

The ‘No Spark’ guy

Location: The Portcullis  I know a girl who goes on 3 dates with every single guy she matches with online, because she says you can’t tell from just one date what they’re really like and whether you actually fancy them.  I see her point, but tend to disagree. For the majority of dates I’ve been on, I've known within the first five minutes I didn’t fancy them! That sounds harsh, but actually it's not got anything to do with looks, height or even how interesting they are. If you don’t have that connection, that 'spark', then it’s not going to go anywhere. That stupid little spark is so important it can overcome anything, so that even if someone is not your usual 'type', you fancy the pants off them. I'm sure there have been many times when a guy has felt that 'something' wasn't there with me. It can hurt, but you just have to accept it and move on. Saying that though, there was one guy I should maybe have tried the 3-dat...

The Sloppy Kisser

Location: Bar near Oxford Circus Still quite new to online dating apps, the messages exchanged between me and this next guy seemed definitely promising…funny, witty and very flirtatious – for some reason we agreed that we would kiss upon meeting (despite being complete strangers) and I was actually really looking forward to the date. Lesson learnt – never look forward to it and never get your hopes up. They will be dashed!  We did indeed kiss upon meeting. But unfortunately it was so horrendously awful that I had to subtly wipe my face with my hand to remove the slobber! This is the first example of how my dating life is starting to mirror that of the Sex and The City girls...and not in a good way. To quote Charlotte: 'It was all around my mouth!' The next half hour passed by in a bit of a blur. I think he was ok…he was good looking and quite funny as I recall, but I was so worried about the chance he might try and kiss me...
